Contact layer activities carried out in contested zones of armed conflict expose malicious behavior and counter-influence. Operation in the contact layer requires 24 / 7 / 365 persistence combined with immediate access to supporting forces in the blunt shift. The ocean layer contains fog, which becomes visible when it lies on condensed air containing water droplets, ice crystals, clouds and soil. Fog is everywhere, but the sea layer is special in that it lies over a large body of water and prevents the fog from catching itself. The sea layer can be present from May to October, but any month can occur at any time. [Sources: 4] 

    

The leading edge of the sea layer extends inland and pushes the fog inland. The sea layer is thick at sunrise and so thick during these events that you can see the morning sickness during dawn patrols. [Sources: 1, 9] 

    

Similar to the sea breeze, the sea layer is the difference between a cool, humid air mass and a warm air mass. The strong downward movement of the high pressure of the upper plane crushes the layer and keeps it confined to the coast. The sea breeze and the sea layer persist along the west coast of the continent for days or weeks. [Sources: 9] 

    

In summer, it's not uncommon to drive across San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge through fog with temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. On the summit of Mount Tamalpais, a few miles from the bridge at an altitude of 784 meters, the sky is clear, and temperatures can be in the 80s and 90s, rising above the cool ocean layer. In June, the gloom comes from the sea layer at lower altitudes, as stratified clouds form over the coastal waters. [Sources: 1, 9] 

    

Similar sets produce our coastal vortices, which cause ocean-layer events. Driven by the same system, the two go hand in hand: high pressure centers over the US West Coast and thermal low pressure (hot air) rise from the deserts in the southwest of the country. The sea layer is a mass of air that develops on the surface of large bodies of water such as the ocean or large lakes at a temperature reversal. [Sources: 1, 10] 

    

When it cools, the surface air becomes less dense than the warm air above and traps below. A temperature reversal triggers a cooling effect on the water beneath the surface layer, which heats the air mass above. [Sources: 10]
